Comfort Measures through Labour

Writer: Sarah PowellSarah Powell

A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support to a woman before, during, and after childbirth, aiming to help her achieve the birth experience she desires by offering comfort, advocacy, and practical assistance while working alongside medical professionals but not performing medical tasks themselves; essentially, they act as a supportive companion throughout the birthing process.

Key aspects of a doula's role:

  • Prenatal support:

Educating the expectant mother about labor and birth options, discussing coping mechanisms, and helping her create a birth plan.

  • Labor support:

Providing physical comfort measures like massage, positioning, breathing techniques, and emotional support during labor contractions.

  • Advocacy:

Communicating the birthing person's needs and wishes to the medical team while respecting their decisions.

  • Postnatal support:

Assisting with breastfeeding, emotional support during the postpartum period, and providing information on newborn care.

Important points to remember about doulas:

  • Non-medical professionals:

Doulas are not medical practitioners and do not provide medical advice or perform clinical procedures.

  • Focus on emotional support:

Their primary role is to provide emotional support, helping the birthing person feel empowered and safe throughout the process.

  • Collaboration with medical team:

Doulas work in collaboration with midwives and doctors, ensuring the birthing person receives comprehensive care.
